      L1049

The Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation is an enlarged and improved development of the Lockheed Constellation family. Introduced in 1951, the L-1049 features a fuselage stretched by 18 feet compared to earlier Constellation variants, increasing passenger capacity to up to 109 passengers. It is powered by four Wright R-3350 Turbo-Compound radial engines, which offered improved power and efficiency over earlier powerplants. With a range of up to 4,500 miles, the Super Constellation was capable of operating long-haul intercontinental routes with only limited refueling stops. The aircraft retained the iconic triple-tail design and distinctive curved fuselage of the Constellation family. The L-1049 was used by airlines such as TWA, Eastern Air Lines, and KLM, as well as military operators including the U.S. Navy as the WV-2/EC-121 Warning Star airborne early warning aircraft. The Super Constellation represented the pinnacle of piston-engine airliner development and is remembered as one of the most beautiful commercial aircraft ever built.
