      B737-500

The Boeing 737-500 is the smallest member of the Boeing 737 Classic family, introduced in 1990 as a modern replacement for the 737-200 on short-haul and thin-route operations. Retaining the fuselage length similar to the original 737-200 but incorporating the advanced CFM International CFM56-3 turbofan engines and updated glass cockpit of the Classic series, the 737-500 can seat up to 132 passengers. With a range of approximately 1,700 nautical miles and excellent short-field performance, the 737-500 was well-suited for regional and feeder routes into smaller airports. Southwest Airlines and United Airlines were among the primary customers, appreciating the commonality it offered with their existing 737-300 and -400 fleets. A total of 389 Boeing 737-500s were delivered before production ended in 1999. The type has proven durable and cost-effective, and while many have been retired by major carriers, a significant number continue to operate with regional airlines and charter operators across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
