      L188

The Lockheed L-188 Electra is a four-engine turboprop airliner developed by the Lockheed Corporation. First introduced in 1959, the Electra was designed for medium-range routes and could seat up to 99 passengers in a high-density layout. It is powered by four Allison 501 turboprop engines, which provide a cruise speed of approximately 400 mph, making it one of the fastest propeller-driven airliners of its era. The L-188 offered airlines a turboprop alternative to jet airliners, combining relatively low operating costs with good speed and passenger comfort. However, the Electra experienced a troubled early service history due to a propeller-related oscillation issue that led to two fatal crashes, which was subsequently corrected. Despite these setbacks, the Electra gained a strong reputation for reliability and longevity. Many L-188s were converted to freighter configuration and continued to serve cargo airlines well into the twenty-first century. The Lockheed Electra also served as the basis for the P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft, ensuring its technological legacy long outlived the commercial variant.
