      Douglas A-26B Invader

The Douglas Aircraft Company produced a total of 1,355 A-26B Invaders in their two plants located Long Beach California and Tulsa Oklahoma. The 3rd Bomber Wing was stationed in Iwakuni Japan as part of the occupation force when they began operations in support of the Korean War. They transferred to Kunsan AB South Korea in August 1951. On January 4, 1952 A-26B-56-DL “Nan” serial 44-34372 c/n 27651 with a buzz code BC-372 began its departure from Iwakuni AB. Part way through the take-off run pilot Dick Gerrity tried to abort and ran off the end of the runway into a soft sand beach. Fortunately the three crew members were hauled from the wreck just before the tide came in that would have drown them
