The Douglas DC-4 was a four-engine, long-range transport aircraft developed in the 1940s, serving both civilian and military roles. Powered by four Pratt & Whitney R-2000 Twin Wasp radial engines, each producing 1,450 hp, the DC-4 had a maximum takeoff weight of 33,100 kg (73,000 lbs) and could carry up to 86 passengers or 9,000 kg (20,000 lbs) of cargo. With a cruising speed of 450 km/h (243 knots) and a range of 6,800 km (3,675 nautical miles), it became a postwar aviation workhorse. Used extensively by the U.S. Air Force as the C-54 Skymaster, the DC-4 pioneered transoceanic service and airlift operations, setting the stage for modern long-haul commercial and military transport aircraft.
