MD83
The McDonnell Douglas MD-83 is a long-range variant of the MD-80 family of twin-engine, single-aisle commercial jetliners. Entering service in 1985, the MD-83 features additional fuel tanks and more powerful Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219 engines compared to other MD-80 variants, extending its range to approximately 2,800 nautical miles. This increased range made the MD-83 well-suited for transcontinental operations and thinner international routes that required more endurance than shorter-range variants. With a typical seating capacity of up to 172 passengers in a single-class configuration, the MD-83 maintained the passenger capacity and cabin dimensions common to the MD-80 family. The MD-83 was popular with leisure and charter carriers, as well as mainline airlines requiring versatile medium-range capability. Operators worldwide, including Alitalia, Alaska Airlines, and numerous charter carriers, valued the MD-83 for its combination of range, capacity, and economical operation on routes underserved by larger wide-body aircraft.
