      DC-8-51

The Douglas DC-8-51 was the first model in the DC-8-50 series, introduced in 1961 with significant improvements in efficiency and performance. It was powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT3D-1 turbofan engines, each producing 17,000 lbf (76 kN) of thrust, offering quieter operation, better fuel economy, and longer range than earlier turbojet models. The DC-8-51 had a maximum takeoff weight of 141,500 kg (312,000 lbs) and typically seated up to 189 passengers. With a cruising speed of 876 km/h (473 knots) and a range of approximately 9,630 km (5,200 nautical miles), it was ideal for long-haul routes. Operated by airlines such as United, Delta, and Eastern, the DC-8-51 helped establish the turbofan-powered jet standard for intercontinental travel.
