      DC-8-40

The Douglas DC-8-40 was an upgraded, long-range variant of the DC-8 series introduced in 1960, notable for being the first production airliner powered by Rolls-Royce Conway 509 turbofan engines. These engines, each producing 17,500 lbf (78 kN) of thrust, offered improved fuel efficiency and reduced noise compared to earlier turbojet models. The DC-8-40 featured increased fuel capacity, strengthened landing gear, and a maximum takeoff weight of 136,080 kg (300,000 lbs). It typically seated up to 189 passengers and cruised at 876 km/h (473 knots) with a range of approximately 9,630 km (5,200 nautical miles). Operated by airlines such as Air Canada, BOAC, and KLM, the DC-8-40 advanced intercontinental jet travel with enhanced performance and comfort.
