The Hawker Siddeley Trident 3E is an enlarged, higher-capacity variant of the British-built Trident family of rear-engine jetliners. Developed for British European Airways (BEA), the Trident 3E entered service in 1971 and featured a stretched fuselage capable of seating up to 180 passengers. It retained the distinctive triple rear-engine configuration of the Trident series, with an additional Rolls-Royce RB162 booster engine in the tail for improved hot-and-high performance on takeoff. The Trident 3E was equipped with the same highly advanced automatic landing system that had become a hallmark of the Trident family, enabling Category III instrument approaches in severely reduced visibility. The aircraft served primarily with BEA and its successor British Airways on busy European routes throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s. Although the Trident series as a whole was eventually overshadowed commercially by aircraft like the Boeing 727, the Trident 3E represented the pinnacle of the design and left a lasting legacy in the field of all-weather operations.
