C46
The Lockheed C-46 Commando was a twin-engine, long-range transport aircraft developed during World War II by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. Originally designed as a pressurized high-altitude airliner, it was adapted for military use due to its exceptional payload and range. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines, the C-46 had a maximum takeoff weight of 22,700 kg (50,000 lbs) and could carry up to 40 troops or 6,000 kg (13,000 lbs) of cargo. With a range of approximately 2,400 km (1,300 nautical miles) and a cruising speed of 270 mph (435 km/h), it was widely used for high-altitude supply missions over the Himalayas ("The Hump"). The C-46 remained in service for decades as a rugged and versatile transport.
