DC-8-61

The Douglas DC-8-61 was a high-capacity, stretched-fuselage variant of the DC-8 series, introduced in 1967 to serve dense, medium-range routes. Powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT3D-3B turbofan engines, each producing 18,000 lbf (80 kN) of thrust, it offered improved efficiency and reliability. The DC-8-61 featured a fuselage stretch of 11.18 meters (36 feet 8 inches) over earlier models, allowing it to carry up to 259 passengers in a two-class configuration. With a maximum takeoff weight of 158,760 kg (350,000 lbs) and a range of approximately 7,400 km (4,000 nautical miles), it was ideal for high-density domestic and transcontinental operations. Operated by airlines such as United, Delta, and Eastern, the DC-8-61 became a workhorse of the late 1960s jet era.
