The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 is a family of twin-engine, single-aisle commercial jetliners developed as a substantially improved successor to the DC-9. The MD-80 series entered service in 1980 and features a stretched fuselage compared to the DC-9, capable of accommodating up to 172 passengers in a typical single-class configuration. The aircraft is powered by two rear-mounted Pratt & Whitney JT8D-200 series turbofan engines, which provide improved fuel efficiency and reduced noise compared to earlier DC-9 powerplants. The MD-80 features an advanced glass cockpit, improved aerodynamics, and a longer range of up to 2,800 nautical miles.
