      DC-10-40

The McDonnell Douglas DC-10-40 was a long-range variant of the DC-10 series, introduced in the mid-1970s and primarily powered by three Pratt & Whitney JT9D-20 turbofan engines, each producing 50,000 lbf (222 kN) of thrust. Designed for extended-range operations, it featured increased fuel capacity and reinforced landing gear for higher takeoff weights. The DC-10-40 typically seated 270 to 380 passengers in a two- or three-class configuration and had a maximum takeoff weight of 251,815 kg (555,000 lbs). With a range of up to 10,600 km (5,700 nautical miles) and a cruising speed of 917 km/h (495 knots), it was well-suited for intercontinental routes. Operated by airlines such as Northwest and Japan Airlines, it became a reliable transoceanic workhorse.
