P3
The Lockheed P-3 Orion is a four-engine turboprop maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft that has served as the primary land-based maritime patrol aircraft for the United States Navy and numerous allied air forces for over six decades. Based on the Lockheed L-188 Electra commercial airliner, the P-3 was first introduced in 1962 and features a distinctive ventral magnetic anomaly detector boom extending from the tail, an internal weapons bay, and multiple hardpoints for carrying torpedoes, depth charges, mines, and missiles. Powered by four Allison T56 turboprop engines, the P-3 has a range of approximately 2,380 nautical miles and an endurance of up to 17 hours, enabling long-duration patrols over vast ocean areas. The aircraft is equipped with advanced acoustic, electronic, and radar sensors for detecting and tracking submarines and surface vessels. The P-3 Orion has seen service with the naval air arms of more than 20 countries and has been continuously upgraded throughout its service life, remaining a highly effective maritime patrol platform into the twenty-first century.
