KC135E
The Boeing KC-135E Stratotanker is a re-engined variant of the original KC-135A aerial refueling aircraft operated by the United States Air Force and Air National Guard. The KC-135E upgrade program replaced the original Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojet engines with CFM International CFM56 high-bypass turbofan engines salvaged from retired Boeing 707 airliners. This re-engining significantly improved the KC-135E's fuel efficiency, offload capability, and overall performance, allowing it to transfer more fuel to receiver aircraft on each mission. The aircraft retains the original KC-135 airframe with its flying boom refueling system and large fuel tanks, capable of carrying up to 200,000 lbs of transferable fuel. The KC-135E served primarily with Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve units, providing a cost-effective means of maintaining tanker capability while more modern KC-135R upgrades were applied to active-duty aircraft. Many KC-135Es were eventually retired or further upgraded to KC-135R standard as the USAF modernized its tanker fleet.
