DC-8-53
The Douglas DC-8-53 was a refined long-range variant of the DC-8-50 series, introduced in 1962 with enhanced performance and efficiency. It was powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT3D-3B turbofan engines, each producing 18,000 lbf (80 kN) of thrust, offering improved fuel economy, quieter operation, and better climb capability. The DC-8-53 featured a maximum takeoff weight of 143,790 kg (317,000 lbs) and typically seated up to 189 passengers. With a cruising speed of 876 km/h (473 knots) and a range of approximately 9,630 km (5,200 nautical miles), it was ideal for intercontinental routes. Operated by carriers such as KLM, Japan Airlines, and Swissair, the DC-8-53 combined reliability, range, and passenger comfort, making it a mainstay of 1960s jet travel.
