V
The Vickers Viscount is a British four-engine turboprop airliner developed by Vickers-Armstrongs and first introduced in 1953. The Viscount holds the distinction of being the world's first turboprop-powered commercial aircraft to enter regular scheduled airline service, representing a major step forward in civil aviation at the dawn of the jet age. Powered by four Rolls-Royce Dart turboprop engines, the Viscount offered a smooth, quiet, and efficient alternative to piston-engine airliners on short- to medium-haul routes. With a seating capacity of up to 71 passengers in the larger Viscount 800 series variants and a cruising speed of approximately 350 mph, the Viscount was a popular and commercially successful aircraft. British European Airways was the type's launch customer, and the Viscount was subsequently exported to airlines across Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. Over 440 Viscounts were produced, making it the best-selling British-built commercial airliner of its era. The Viscount left a lasting legacy in aviation as a pioneer of turboprop airliner technology.
