      MD87

The McDonnell Douglas MD-87 is a shortened, longer-range variant of the MD-80 series of narrow-body commercial jetliners. Entering service in 1987, the MD-87 features a fuselage approximately 16 feet shorter than other MD-80 variants, with seating for up to 139 passengers in a typical two-class layout. To compensate for the shorter cabin, the aircraft received additional fuel capacity, giving it a range of approximately 2,900 nautical miles, the longest of any MD-80 variant. The MD-87 was powered by two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-217C turbofan engines. Its reduced capacity made the MD-87 suitable for thinner routes that did not justify the larger MD-82 or MD-83, while its increased range opened up medium-distance markets. A modern glass cockpit option improved cockpit ergonomics and situational awareness. Operators including Austrian Airlines, Iberia, and SAS utilized the MD-87 on European and transatlantic routes where its unique combination of capacity and range was especially well suited.
