TC18E
The Boeing TC-18E is a military training aircraft variant of the Boeing 707 airliner operated by the United States Air Force to train flight crews destined for the E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft. The TC-18E designation covers former commercial 707-320C airframes that were converted to provide realistic crew training for the E-3 Sentry, which is itself based on the 707 platform. The TC-18E retains the fundamental airframe and flight characteristics of the commercial 707, allowing student crews to develop the skills needed for AWACS operations without the cost and resource demands of using the actual E-3 aircraft. Powered by four Pratt & Whitney TF33 turbofan engines, the TC-18E serves as a versatile crew training platform. The aircraft has been an important component of the USAF's efforts to maintain a proficient and well-prepared E-3 aircrew force. The TC-18E program reflects the broader utility of the 707 airframe as a platform for diverse military applications beyond its original commercial transport role.
