      L049

The Lockheed L-049 Constellation is the original production variant of the iconic Lockheed Constellation family of long-range piston-engine airliners. First introduced in 1945, the Constellation was instantly recognizable for its distinctive triple-tail design and elegant curved fuselage. Powered by four Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone radial engines, the L-049 could carry up to 60 passengers over a range of approximately 2,400 miles. Pan American World Airways, TWA, and other major carriers quickly adopted the Constellation for their prestigious long-haul routes, including the first postwar transatlantic passenger services. The L-049 was originally developed at the request of TWA founder Howard Hughes to provide competitive transcontinental and intercontinental range. With its pressurized cabin, the Constellation offered passengers a significantly more comfortable high-altitude flying experience compared to earlier aircraft. The L-049 marked the beginning of one of aviation's most beloved aircraft families and set a new standard for post-war commercial air travel.
