DC-8-63
The Douglas DC-8-63 was the ultimate and most capable variant of the DC-8 family, introduced in 1967 to combine the capacity of the DC-8-61 with the range of the DC-8-62. It was powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT3D-7 turbofan engines, each producing 19,000 lbf (85 kN) of thrust, delivering excellent fuel efficiency and long-range performance. The DC-8-63 featured a stretched fuselage and aerodynamic enhancements, giving it a maximum takeoff weight of 158,760 kg (350,000 lbs) and seating for up to 259 passengers. With a cruising speed of 876 km/h (473 knots) and a range of 10,200 km (5,500 nautical miles), it became a favorite for intercontinental service. Airlines such as KLM, SAS, and Air Canada widely operated the DC-8-63 on long-haul routes.
